Cluster I: Phosphorus in the environment – P pools and mobilization potential in lowlands and coastal regions

Cluster I of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Phosphorus Research Rostock investigates phosphorus mobility and fluxes in the North German lowlands and coastal regions across terrestrial-aquatic boundaries. Phosphorus (P) ends up in the environment through open-ended industrial cycles and along river flows, reaching the sea. The aim is a better understanding of P fluxes and cycles in the environment in order to analyse the effects of high P inputs. This starts at the "sources", for example with the application of fertilizer on agricultural land and the effects of artificial drainage (drain systems), but also at the river outlets of small and large wastewater treatment plants. The transfer continues through phosphorus fluxes in different ecosystems, from special soil crusts over peatlands to coastal waters and into the large Baltic Sea basin. Methodological approaches in Cluster I include measurements on the smallest scale up to the Baltic Sea ecosystem modelling over a wide range of scales. The Cluster also focuses on the continuous improvement of instrumental analytical approaches and methods.
